Competitions are open to all members, both full, and postal for now. There is no monetary award for prize winners, but a trophy is given, along with a certificate. The trophies have to be returned, so the certificate is a lasting memento of success.

There are usually 6 competitions throughout the year, and the subject for each competition is decided at Committee meetings held during the summer break.
Competitions might be a short story with/without a particular theme, an article with/without a particular theme, a poem, etc.

The length of the item for each competition is also decided, and these usually have a maximum length of around 2,000 words for stories/articles, and 40 lines for poems.

2,000 words is roughly 4 pages of typed script in Times New Roman, double spaced, on one side of the page, in 12 point.
