Join One of the Longest Running Writers’ Clubs in the UK
Greenock Writers’ Club, established in 1968, is an encouraging and supportive voice for our members, many of whom have been published. With a range of interests, writing styles and genres, our annual programme of events by well-known guest speakers and member presentations, along with writing competitions and inspiring writing exercises, is designed to stimulate and entertain writers of all levels.
Membership is open to adults (aged 18 and over) who live in and around Inverclyde. We believe in equality and inclusion, and members of all abilities and from all backgrounds are welcome. Diversity drives creativity. The club is also a member of the Scottish Association of Writers (SAW) and was one of its founder members.
Our Meetings
Our syllabus is split in two, running from mid-September to early December, and then mid-January to early April. This year we are very excited to announce we will have a new home in The Wyllieum overlooking the Clyde in Greenock. We meet on Wednesday nights at 7.30pm – please see our syllabus for specific dates and more information.
Our programme of events varies annually, supporting and encouraging all aspects of writing –short stories, novels, poetry, song writing, article writing, playwriting, history, crime, memoir, fantasy, comedy – to stretch our imagination, enhance our writing skills, and help you find your voice. Meetings are never dull with lively debate and conversation, guest speakers and adjudicators, and writing exercises to build confidence and challenge our thinking. Whatever your preferred writing style, you’ll find members in the club who share your enthusiasm! For a taster, please take a look at some of our blogs or check out our Facebook page.
Writing Competitions
We hold between four and six competitions each year. These encourage members to respond to the syllabus through writing a combination of prose, poetry and scriptwriting. Adjudicators provide honest and constructive feedback – invaluable for developing our writing skills and confidence. Find out more on our competitions page.
This year we will celebrate the quality of our members’ writing by again producing a new anthology of work, which will invite submission of short stories, different types of poetry, creative non-fiction and everything in between!
How to Join
Simply turn up at one of our meetings. If you have any questions before you do, email us at ask@greenockwriters.co.uk
We’re happy for you to come along to a couple of meetings before deciding if the club is for you. For the Session 2025/2026 the annual fee is payable in two instalments: September–December: £35, and January–April £35. This works out at about £3 per meeting, and allows you to take part in the competitions. There are options to pay in instalments, and as we believe that writing should be accessible to everyone, we offer concession rates for students, those on a low income, and individuals receiving benefits. Please contact us confidentially at ask@greenockwriters.co.uk to discuss your options.
I look forward to welcoming you to GWC.
