Competitions
Competitions are open to all members, and we encourage everyone to submit an entry. Each winner is presented with a trophy, which requires to be returned for the following year’s competition. In addition, winners and runners-up receive a certificate, which serves as a lasting memento of their success.
The number of competitions per year ranges from 4 to 6. These are reviewed annually when the syllabus is being compiled. Generally, they include short stories, articles or poems with a particular theme. In recent years they have included radio and drama as we expand and explore new aspects of writing as a Club.
Each competition has its own guidelines. For example, short stories and articles are generally restricted to 2,000 – 2,500 words, and poems with a maximum of 40 lines.
As a guideline, 2,000 words is roughly 4 pages of typed script in Times New Roman, double-spaced, on one side of the page in font size 12.
