El Presidente Anne began last nights AGM with a vote of thanks to long standing committee stalwarts club secretary Isobel Watt and treasurer David McKelvie who are standing down at the end of the year after many long years of service. Grahame (our SAW representative) reported that the SAW conference at the weekend was a great success – there were even calls to do it online next year aswell. Also Isobel and Tony both did the club proud in SAW’s flash fiction and novel competitions respectively.
After the usual AGM business there followed a discussion of the syllabus for next year. Talks by the writers Theresa Talbert, Leela Soma, comedy writer Billy O’Hara and slam poet Katherine McFarlane were suggested. (Disclaimer: I may have misspelled some of these names). After a brief interruption involving Tony chasing a cute puppy across the Paris skyline, Margaret read out her highly commended article ‘Land of Contradictions’. Complete with atmospheric music (possibly a GWC first) we heard about comforting elephants and crab infested beaches. Thailand certainly lived up to Margaret’s title
The evening finished with a flawless power-point award certificate ceremony by Isobel (clearly vying for Grahame’s job of IT supremo) and a discussion on whether for next season (if we’re still zooming) we should have some kind of informal meeting in between our regular fortnightly meetings. There was no time for a writing exercise but if anyone wants to, you can write ‘Something on String – or possibly Spring’ for next time.
Next meeting is the 14th April – Adjudication of short story competition (featuring a teenage protagonist).
