Last Wednesday 29th January, our club was treated to a visit by author Alan Bisset.
Alan is now a well known and highly published author and playwright, who, after starting to write in his teens went on to complete a full length novel .
He attended the Stirling writers group where he honed his writing skills while being mentored by Poet and fellow member Magi Gibson. Alan writes in the Falkirk vernacular, which he says helps with his creative process, and reaches out to those whose first language is Scots. Amongst his most successful publications is the Moira Monologues , which he now performs to great acclaim. Moira is based on his female relations, Aunties, cousins etc. , and has proved so popular he’s written two more .
Another unusual book he’s written is Lucky Susan, where the reader gets to choose the adventures the heroine will go on, all written in the Scots language.
After a very interesting talk, Alan gave us a writing exercise. a monologue where the audience was playing the character of the listener.
Three excellent and hysterically funny monologues were read out, Tracy Rogers Tartan Tam, Gordon Wilkinsons’ Practical Joker and Andy Dowlings’ Stole a Fork .
A very interesting guest and highly enjoyable evening.
